The real difference between needs and wants

Lesson video · 4:12 · with Ms. Rita
Every dollar you spend falls into one of three buckets: a need, a want, or savings. Most adults can't tell you the difference between the first two. By the end of this chapter, you will.
So what's the difference, really?
A need is something that keeps your life functional. Food. Shelter. Transportation to school. A phone reliable enough to call home and do your homework. A want is something that makes life more enjoyable but isn't required for it to keep working — the designer case for that phone, the latest sneakers, the matcha latte instead of water.
The trick most adults miss: wants aren't bad. The problem is treating wants like needs. When you call your daily Starbucks a "need," you stop being able to choose. Knowing what's actually a need is what gives you power.
Try this
Look at what you spent money on in the last 7 days. Sort each item into needs, wants, and savings. Most people are surprised by how much of their "needs" are actually wants — and how that one shift in awareness changes their whole budget.

Hey ladies! 👋 Big question for the week — when you really sit with your last 7 days of spending, is there something you'd been telling yourself was a need that you now realize is actually a want?
No wrong answers. The whole point is to see it clearly, and then decide what you want to do about it. Drop your honest take 👇

Y'all I had no idea how much I was spending on snacks at the corner store 😭 it's like $7 a week which sounds small but that's almost $30 a month?? on chips???
I had it in my head as a "need" because I'm hungry after school but… I have food at home lol. Wild.

Mine is rideshares. I kept telling myself "it's safer / it's faster" but the bus literally goes to the same place. I think I was paying $20+ a week just to avoid waiting 12 minutes 💀
Going to try the bus this week and put the difference in savings. Will report back.

Maya Renée
for completing the How to Do Money Year 1 curriculum — six modules, twelve weeks, and one cohort of sisters who showed up for each other. May this be the foundation of every financial decision that follows.
"Doing this honestly was kinda embarrassing 😅 I had no idea how much I was spending on snacks. Like $7 a week for chips? I was telling myself it was a need cause I'm hungry after school but I literally have food at home. Going to bring a snack from home this week and put the difference toward my prom dress fund."

Last activity: opened Module 2 Chapter 2 video, watched 1:24 of 8:00, exited. Hasn't started the "Sort Your Week" assignment. She did post once in the discussion thread today — first sign of life this week — and Ms. Rita already replied. Recommend a low-pressure check-in DM in the next 24 hours.
Mom started a new shift at the hospital — Nia is watching her younger brother on weeknights. May affect cadence. Be flexible on deadlines but keep the door open.

Smart, observant, a little quiet on calls but DMs are great. Sees herself as "not a math person." Would benefit from being paired w/ Aaliyah for Module 4.
